Overall Review

***spoilers***

I give Artemis Fowl by Eion Colfer 5 out of 5 stars. The book starts off with Artemis and his person body guard called Butler on a hunt in Vietnam. There he is looking for a book that contains the rules of the possibly existing fairy world. He eventually finds it and decodes it, this leads to shape the whole story.

The main plot of the story was basically Artemis kidnapping Captain Holly Short and holding her for ransom. He wanted 1 ton of unmarked 24 carrot gold in exchange for the fairy. Using the book of fairy rules he decoded to his advantage he outsmarted them since they were not aware of it. At the end he ends up giving half of that gold and Holly grants his mother sanity, then they part ways until next time.

It seems the theme of this story is conflict between good and evil with Artemis in himself which seems to be caused by greed. But in reality it appeared Artemis just wanted to make his father proud and was trying to distract himself from his mothers insanity with his crazy adventures. I love this book because of the way Artemis thinks, he is so clever and young but simple and though he doesn’t have the best intentions you can tell her really cares for his family. I would love to have his knowledge or be able to take things in from his point of view.

Why does this book matter?!

I think this book is relevant to readers today because not only is it entertaining but Artemis’s point of view and the way he thinks is unlike many others. The other does a good job of showing this in the book, also Artemis is 12 so I feel it would encourage younger readers to feel more capable of their own abilities. Because of this I think you should keep the book on the reading list. One thing I wish I knew more about is Artemis‘s personal life. I feel that given his name there is some connection to the Greek god with that name that I am missing.

Holly’s Point of View

As I collided with the wall my whole body felt like it had combusted, I couldn’t handle the pain. The commander said “Your lungs are busted Captain.” I reached over and placed my hand on the large human stomach in hopes of healing him so he could at least save the sweet younger child, Juliet. I felt the tingle of magic spurting from my finger tips as I drifted off to sleep.

Blog #4 History

At the beginning of Artemis Fowl Artemis is trying to decode an ancient book. On page 33 he finds out it is written in  “Anubis gods representation of Tutankhamen’s inner chamber hieroglyphics.” This was very interesting because it’s cool to see how other people write and interpret things. Especially from such a long time ago, according to Wikipedia this language/hieroglyphics is from the “18th Dynasty.” Also Artemis goes to great time consuming lengths to translate this whole thing which is impressive for a 12yr old.

Thoughts on Book

  1. What do you think happened just before your story started? The beginning of the story implied that Artemis’s father disappeared and was deemed probably dead, this caused his mother to go mentally insane. He is an only child tha
  2. Think about a setting in your book. If you were in the setting, what are some things you might see? I would probably see an enormous manor given that’s where Artemis lives surrounded by nature and tons of other places because since he has no parents he goes where ever in the world he pleases.
  3. List three facts about this book. Then, list three opinions about it. Artemis Fowl is 12 years old. He comes from a family of billionaires and he has a personal body guard. He is also a criminal mastermind, he does have feelings despite being so cruel, and he usually always win not by exactly being smarter than his opponents but by thinking how they would.
